In the southern part of India this festival is known by the name Pongal and is celebrated for a period of around four days. In Andhra Pradesh the first day marks cleaning and cleansing, and is called Bhogi which represents the beginning of new life. The second day people cook rice or milk because the word Pongal means to boil.
In western region, especially in Maharashtra and Gujarat , large kite flying festivals are organized on Makar Sankranti and the sky is filled with different beautiful coloured kites of different shapes and sizes. One can also see paper lamps flying in the night sky on this day. The food item which is made in every household of Maharashtra on Makar Sankranti are the ladoos made of sesame and jaggery which are loved by every individual.
In Punjab this festival is called Lohri, people light bonfires and throw sweets, rice and sugarcane on it to express gratitude for good harvest. In large gatherings people dance and eat delicious food together to make this festival memorable.
In Uttar Pradesh, this festival is celebrated by the name Kicheri when people follow the tradition of taking bath in sangam of river Ganga, Jamuna and Saraswati at prayagraj to cleanse them from their past sins and welcome a new beginning.
On makar sankranti people worship God Surya and lord Shani. People perform surya namaskar and chant gayatri mantra to show their devotion for their gods. Makar sankranti is an integrated part of hindu mythology and culture. All old and young individuals participate in it enthusiastically and enjoy happy and melodious moments together with their friends and family.
